Dear Martine Doyen,
On behalf of Bero Beyer, festival director, it is my pleasure to officially invite your film Hamsters to participate in the 46th International Film Festival Rotterdam, which will take place 25 January – 5 February 2017.
Your film is selected to be part of A Band Part. As Punk turned forty years old, bringing disorder/enlightenment to society with radical measures has taken on new forms. This program will pick contemporary films with the same punk energy and is about fringe/splinter groups/individuals (« A Band Apart ») impacting public space and lives through rebellion, performances and music, from West to East, from funny pranks to more violent means, from non-sense to terror. This is angst and anxiety to be played at maximum volume.
Why punk now? A Band Apart is mostly Sex-Pistols-free but joining a group of radicals feels like joining a rock band, with the same group dynamics at its core. There’s a leader. There’s dissent. There’s shock and awe. There’s a sense of theatrics. And there’s an audience. As terrorism expert Brian Jenkins wrote in 1974, « terrorism is theater ». We’ll also twist that idea into « theater is terrorism ». A Band. A Part.
